Learning About Your Clutter Through Your Body

You can use your emotions to sense how clutter is different from other things in your house. Try this technique.
  1. Sit down near a space with some of your clutter.
  2. Take a moment to look carefully over that space, noting the details.
  3. Pay attention to how your body feels as you do it. You may need to close your eyes to consider this question. Is there any tightness anywhere in your body, or do you have an edgy feeling?
  4. Now sit down near a space that is in order, and follow the same exercise. How does your body feel now? Can you identify any relaxed areas within you?
Consider how the stuff in your house may be a metaphor for something going on for you. It may be something you cling to, something you don't want to change, but it also may mirror something you want to ignore, hide, cloister, defend, or block out. It's powerful and illuminating how our environment can help us understand our lives.
